Big Sam’s Funky Nation

When you think of New Orleans, the city’s foremost flambeaux-lit traditions of Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street, voodoo, Po’ boys, beads, gumbo, and second line undoubtedly come to mind. You can also count Big Sam’s Funky Nation amongst those NOLA treasures.

Known for a boisterous blend of funk, jazz, rock, and hip-hop, nothing short of seismic live “experiences, and a whole lot of Southern charm, Big Sam’s Funky Nation might very well be The Big Easy’s best kept secret.

No other place could birth such an undeniable, unpredictable, and downright unique collective.

The Main Squeeze

The Main Squeeze, with deep musical roots sprouted in the Midwest, have scored their lives at each twist and curve. While starting out as a party band at Indiana University, their forthcoming April 28threlease “Without a Sound” illustrates their increasing musical maturity and creativity inspired by their new home in Los Angeles.

If maturity comes with experience, “Without a Sound” reflects this.  The Main Squeeze has spent several years building their foundation since being championed by producer Randy Jackson: they have played Red Rocks; shared the stage with The Roots, Aloe Blacc, Jane’s Addiction, Umphrey’s McGee, and Trombone Shorty; and performed at music festivals like Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Summer Camp, and High Sierra.

The Main Squeeze is a blend of soul and hip-hop, funk with rock.  They know their sound is “soulful, powerful, and unique” (Newman).  Rolling Stone agrees in their recent critique of a live show: “Lead singer Corey Frye’s powerfully soulful vocals forms the foundation of an energetic set.”

Dustbowl Revival

Dustbowl Revival is an Americana and Soul band with eight full-time members who mash the sounds of New Orleans funk, bluegrass, soul, pre-war blues, and roots music, into a genre-hopping, time-bending dance party that coaxes new fire out of familiar coal.  They band was founded in 2008 in the bohemian enclave of Venice Beach, California.

Dustbowl just recorded their fourth studio album with Grammy Award winning producer (Old Crow Medicine Show, Dropkick Murphy's) and Flogging Molly founding member Ted Hutt, to come out on Signature Sounds this summer. While the band launched with an old-time style and deeper bluegrass roots (a fateful Craigslist ad got it all started), they recently departed toward a more modern soul sound, still with their mixture of New Orleans swing, Americana, a little blues, and roots-rock. The soul-dipped first single of their new collaboration, came out on a 45 with a music video in the end of 2016, with a premiere via Relix Magazine.

Ron Artis II & The Truth

To say that Ron Artis II plays music from his heart and soul would be a bit of understatement. With his family upbringing and incredible early success, you may even say it has been pre-ordained. So how does one of the great musical talents of his generation come seemingly out of nowhere? Well, that part of the mystery is easy to solve. He’s been paradise’s best kept secret for years and now he’s finally making big waves on the mainland and beyond.

Ron moved to Oahu, Hawaii with his family when he was only four years old. And what a prodigious family it is! He is one of eleven total children, all of whom grew up immersed in a creative and religious household led by his musically gifted parents. Ron explains “My mother is a beautiful singer and my biggest influence on my approach to singing. My father was always the performer, the writer and arranger.”

Edge of the West 8x10.jpg

Edge of the West

Musical adventurers Edge Of The West have been steadily touring the Western US, Alaska and Hawaii for three years now, exploring the deep American outback, exciting audiences and rocking their Americana OutlawJ amband blend of originals and rootsy covers.  The four singers and writers in the group bring a bounty of songs of their own plus a deep repertoire of covers in many genres. Edge Of The West goes in all directions. Some jammy nights they'll throw down a ton of Dead, Neil Young, maybe some New Orleans vibes, while some honky tonk nights go hard-core country, Gram Parsons, and Western swing. Or it might be an all-original Americana showcase, an exploration of obscurities, or a good old barroom boogie. Usually it's all of the above. Their eponymous first record was released in Spring 2016 with the next one in process for release 2019.

Featuring eerily familiar members who've also played with the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Todd Snider, Jefferson Starship, Peter Rowan, Great American Taxi, The Choir, Lacy J Dalton, and more, Edge Of The West brings some serious cred, history, family ties and deep musical roots to the table. And they know how to show ‘em a good time. That’s what they do.

Cousins Sean (Vocals/Guitar) and Kevin Eichhorn (Vocals/Keys) began jamming in local garages at age 10. Music was deeply rooted in their family and the thought of forming a group was inevitable. Influenced by the surf rock scene of Santa Cruz, classic rock, and reggae music, they began to compose their own original music at an early age. In 2014, while both training for professional baseball, Kevin and good friend Adrian Jerome DeMar (Bass) would reconnect and the band began solidifying a path of music. The group fuses together steady and mesmerizing reggae grooves alongside flares of heavy rock and shredding lead guitar. Soulwise features a deep rhythm section of bass, drums, keys, guitar and horns. Lyrically, the songs of Soulwise are born from life experiences, inspirations, and good times that provide listeners with a dynamic mood.

In 2015 the group released their first EP "Talkin' Bout Love" that debuted at #12 on iTunes reggae releases and their recent first full length album "Good Day" debuted at #3 on iTunes reggae charts in December 2017. They have played in numerous festivals; Santa Cruz Music Festival, CruzFest, Ink at the Bay, Redwood Mountain Faire, as well as played up and down the California coast. They have also supported Jamaican greats Don Carlos, Warrior King, Jo Mersa Marley, and have shared the stage with Josh Heinrichs and Skillinjah.

The Risky Biscuits

From the Sierra Nevada foothills, The Risky Biscuits bring an original mix of heel-kicking stompers and humble ballads, creating an eclectic mix of americana, bluegrass, rock, soul, and country. With members originating from Boston, New Jersey, Tennessee, and California, the Biscuits provide the kind of sound that only develops when backgrounds and styles collide.

That sound is rooted heavily in the meeting of instruments that cross paths, but rarely converge. The Risky Biscuits combine Nate Semprebon on lead vocals and keyboard, Travis Schlafmann on banjo, Kiel Williams on electric guitar, Austin Broder on violin, Andy Merrill on electric bass, and Sky Harris on drums. This blending of the amplified, and the acoustic is half of what makes this band stand out so much. The other half of course, is the music itself.  The band aims to cross genres in a way that is progressive, yet fundamentally simple. That being said, you never quite know what you'll get when you see a show. Things can go from psychedelic, to folksy and back in the time it takes to grab a beer. Wouldn't be too "risky" of a band if switching it up wasn't a big part of the formula.

Erin Chapin, Caitlin Gowdey, and Vanessa May -the dynamic trio known as Rainbow Girls- have emerged as a much-loved live act both abroad and on their California home turf. Rainbow Girls' discerning sensibility in regards to living in this good ol' U.S. of A. is acutely reflected in their impassioned debut record as a trio, "American Dream." One Grass Two Grass - Photo.jpg

One Grass Two Grass

One Grass Two Grass delivers high energy, hard driving, fun-loving, old-timey, new-timey, good-timey, rockin’ California string band music.  The group has performed at The Yonder Mountain String Band’s Northwest String Summit outside of Portland Oregon, they’ve headlined San Francisco’s iconic Great American Music Hall, they were a top 5 finalist for the High Sierra Music Festival Band Competition, they’ve performed on Lagunitas’ Jam-in-the-Van, and played both the Hangtown Music Festival and the Winter Wondergrass Festival.  Since getting their start in 2012 in the San Francisco Bay Area, One Grass Two Grass has criss crossed the western states grooving on their rhythmic brand of bluegrass music from Oregon to New Mexico, from Montana to LA and of coarse their home away from home Colorado, teaming up with many of their heros and friends in the genre along the way.  In 2018, the talented drummer Rhyne Erde proposed the addition of percussion and those new beats haven't stopped since.

Elliott Peck

As one of the most sought-after vocalists on the West Coast, Elliott Peck has made a name for herself lending vocals to everyone from Phil Lesh and Bob Weir to Jackie Greene and Reid Genauer. As a member of the band Midnight North, and Phil Lesh's Terrapin Family Band, she’s appeared on bills with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and The Infamous Stringdusters, and slayed festivals from Lockn’ to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Now, with her mesmerizing solo debut, Peck is stepping center stage, ready to prove she’s a talent more than worthy of the spotlight on her own.

“I’ve been writing songs for a long time and I’ve been really fortunate these last few years to perform with so many great musicians,” says Peck, “but I wanted to try something different with this album. I wanted to focus on writing for myself, to see if I could come up with something that I’d be proud to call my own.”

Henry Chadwick

In late 2017 Henry Chadwick entered the studio with producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Kurt Vile etc.) and engineer, Brian Rosemeyer (Kurt Vile, Cass McCombs, Surfer Blood etc.), and emerged with Henry’s most personal and ambitious effort to date. Chadwick acted as a multi-instrumentalist again, playing drums, guitar, bass and keys on the record. The 11-song album (which came out in the 2nd half of 2018) is named Marlin Fisher, after Henry’s two middle names. Marlin Fisher has received praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, No Depression and more.
Chadwick's self-produced and released 2016 debut EP, Guest At Home, first showcased his skills as a writer, engineer, mixer and performer. The EP garnered attention from prominent blogs and outlets such as Rolling Stone, Time, Huffington Post, Indie Shuffle and others. Rolling Stone and Time Magazine listed it as one of the best albums to come out in the first half of 2016.

Dancing between genres and landing somewhere between indie, garage rock, psychedelia and shimmery, sunshine-tinged power-pop, Henry picks up where he left off and moves across plenty of new terrain on this personal and ambitious full-length debut.

Known as a standout electric guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Mandy Fer fills the stage with her strong yet poised guitar solos, defying long-held gender barriers for female guitarists. Dave McGraw’s emotional songwriting riffs on natural elements of the world around him. McGraw spent a decade as a wildlife biologist, studying endangered birds in remote locales from the deserts of Mexico and the Grand Canyon to the mountainous rainforests of Washington. McGraw and Fer joined forces in Flagstaff, Arizona in 2010 before relocating to the Pacific Northwest in 2012.

Eric Morrison & The Mysteries

“Enjoy the mystery,” Eric Morrison’s bio ominously states. The local musician isn’t quite so ambiguous when he straps on a guitar and sings his heart out. He and his backing band have become one of the most talented American roots rock acts in Santa Cruz. It’s called Americana Soul, which is a way of saying that there’s a little bit of blues, some swamp rock, some country influences, and a healthy heaping of R&B.
